2 Vintage Kashmir India Paper Mache Powder Boxes / Multicolor Hand Painted Floral Lacquer Box / Decorative Round Shaped Trinket Gift Jewelry Box
From the region of Kashmir India comes these sweet little powder trinket boxes. These decorative boxes are handcrafted out of papier-mâché, a craft that has been part of Kashmiri culture since the 15th century. The process of shaping the box is called sakhtazi, and starts with recycled paper pulp that is soaked, molded, then dried. The surface is then coated with glue, burnished smooth, and layered with tissue paper. Then the box is entirely hand painted, a process called naqashi. Finally, lacquer is applied to seal the box, giving durability to these little boxes. These decorative boxes would be beautiful on display, make a great gift and made even nicer when you fill it with an (engagement) ring or another small offering.
Handcrafted in India
The inside of these paper Mache boxes are painted with black lacquer. The outer are hand painted with intricate floral designs.
Lovely vintage condition. Light wear around area where lid gets pulled on and off. Tiny spot of paint loss with worn bottom on the larger box (see pictures 4 and 10). Be sure to use the ZOOM tool for closer inspection of pictures as they are part of the description.
